The Advent season: yes it was about Jesus’ coming, but it was also about the Holy Spirit coming after Him.
“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”
How amazing it is that when Emmanuel stepped out of eternity and into humanity that He came not only to bring us salvation – the greatest miracle ever done, but also to give us the tools and power that we would need to succeed in this relationship with Him.
Jesus told His disciples that it was needful for Him to go because it was only in that way that the Holy Spirit would come. Jesus, you see, recognized that what He was calling people to couldn’t be accomplished in their own strength and abilities. He understood that we were going to need help.
Even the desire for God is contrary to our fleshly nature, let alone doing the will of the Father from day-to-day in our lives. And so Jesus knew that He had to return to the Father and that God the Holy Spirit needed to come and move this whole thing forward in the lives of His people. From inside them, not just next to them.
And that is why we celebrate this Advent season – because, yes it was about Jesus’ coming, but it was also about the Holy Spirit coming after Him – giving us all the power, all the tools that we would need to live this thing out called the Christian life.
May God take away all your fears and give you great strength as you use this season to point people to Him.
